CHAP. 23. (5.)--VEGETABLES OF A CARTILAGINOUS NATURE--CUCUMBERS. PEPONES.
The cucumber belongs to the cartilaginous class of plants, and grows above the ground. It was a wonderful favourite with the Emperor Tiberius, and, indeed, he was never without it; for he had raised beds made in frames upon wheels, by means of which the cucumbers were moved and exposed to the full heat of the sun; while, in winter, they were withdrawn, and placed under the protection of frames glazed with mirror-stone.

軟骨質の植物の種類に属し地面になるものはキュウリである。これはティベリウス帝（Emperor Tiberius）が殊のほか愛好した。彼はそれ無しではいられなかった。彼は車輪のついたキュウリの苗床を持っており、（日の当たる場所に）運んでは太陽の熱に晒し、冬には鏡石の板ガラスを嵌めた枠の覆いの下に引き入れた。
