Gook /ˈɡʊk/ is a derogatory term for East Asians (especially Koreans[original research?]) which came to prominence in reference to enemy soldiers.[1][unreliable source?] U.S. Marines serving in the Philippines in the early 20th century used the word to refer to Filipinos.[1] The term continued to be used by American soldiers stationed around the world to refer to non-Americans.[2][3] It acquired its current status as a derogatory word for Asians at the time of the Vietnam War.[4]
