(Asiad) Japanese hockey players allegedly gave badge with wartime flag to S. Korean students
INCHEON, Sept. 19 (Yonhap) -- Some Japanese hockey players training for the Incheon Asian Games allegedly gave South Korean students badges bearing the rising sun flag, Tokyo"s controversial wartime emblem, officials at a high school here said Friday.
Some 20 high school girls were watching the Japanese players train for the Asiad at their school"s gymnasium in the western port city when they were given the badges with the initials JHA, which stands for the Japan Hockey Association, engraved on them.
The triangle-shaped badge resembles the hockey association"s logo, visible on the JHA website (http://www.en.hockey.or.jp).
"It seems that the athletes gave the badges out as souvenirs, but the students were stunned to find a picture of the rising sun flag on it," a school official said.
The wartime symbol is one that many South Koreans find offensive, as it is a reminder of Japan"s colonization of the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945, and conveys a similar message as does the Nazi mark from World War II to the victims at the time.
The students also complained that some of the hockey players handed sweaty paper towels to the girls instead of throwing them away, according to school officials.
"We"ve brought up this issue to the organizing committee of the Asian Games," the official added.
In a response to the incident, the committee said it will soon hold a meeting to discuss the issues at hand.
Last year, some Japanese football fans came under fire after they waved the rising sun flag while cheering for their national team during the East Asian Cup held in Seoul.
