Schalke vs Man United Player Ratings
We rate the players in the Champions League semi-final first-leg between Schalke and Manchester United that the visitors won 2-0.
United lorded proceedings from the opening whistle and it was only the magnificent Manuel Neuer who stopped it from being an embarrassing scoreline. Nonetheless, 2-0 should be enough to book United a place in the Wembley final.
Schalke
Manuel Neuer - 9.5
One can see why clubs across Europe are stumbling over themselves and towards Schalke with a blank cheque in hand. It might have been one of the most one-sided scorelines in Champions League history had it not been for the young German.
Atsuto Uchida - 6.5
Was one the better players for Schalke going forward. Got behind the United defence and looked most likely to deliver a telling ball into the area. Got a couple of good blocks in at the other end too.
Joel Matip - 4
Fared marginally better than Metzelder and at the very least, looked to unsettle Hernandez with some good old-fashioned shoulder barging. As guilty as his partner in leaving gaping holes at the back.
Christoph Metzelder - 2.5
Diabolically poor. Could not cope with any of United"s forwards, leaving large gaps which Javier Hernandez, Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs exploited. If one could peek under than mask, one would see a blushing central defender.
Hans Sarpei - 4 (off 73")
Skipped past Fabio on a couple of occasions, although failed to get any penetration on his crosses. Never looked comfortable against Antonio Valencia though.
Kyrikos Papadopoulos - 4
Struggled to cope with the range of Rooney"s passing and movement. Fluffed his lines whenever Schalke had the chance to break.
Jose Jurado (off 83") - 3.5
Looked out of place and overwhelmed by the occasion. Gave the ball away more often than anyone cared to count and wasted the few remote chances Schalke had to trouble Edwin van der Sar.
Alexander Baumjohann (off 53") - 3
Was on the sidelines of the action most of the time, although he did get one of the few shots Schalke had on target.
Jefferson Farfan (AM) - 4.5
Much was expected of him, but the highly-rated midfielder disappointed when it mattered most. Could not get past the Michael Carrick and the rest of United"s midfield. Failed to provide Raul with any kind of support.
Raul - 7
Had no help at all, but the former Real Madrid hitman ran all night long, going deep into his own midfield to at least try and win the ball for his side. Full marks for effort, only seven for impact.
Edu - 5.5
Looked dangerous on a couple of occasions, but was let down by poor touches.
Subs
Peer Kluge (on 53") - 3
Was as ineffective as Baumjohann, the man he replaced.
Sergio Escudero (on 73") - 5
Carved out a decent scoring opportunity after some good control at the edge of the area. Nothing much to write home about defensively.
Julian Draxler (on 83") - n.a
Man United
Edwin van der Sar - 6
Might as well have strung a hammock between the goal-posts. Had a couple of long rangers to deal with and did that comfortably.
Fabio - 8
He seems to have worked on the defensive side of his game - or maybe Schalke didn"t have the firepower to really test him. Either way, the fiery Brazilian was superb, especially when dealing with high balls into the area. Adventurous as always going forward.
Rio Ferdinand - 6
Might as well have cracked open a cold one and enjoyed it with Vidic and Van der Sar. Only had Raul to deal with and was up to that.
Nemanja Vidic - 6
Ditto. Easy night out for the Serb.
Patrice Evra - 7.5
Another defender who was never really stretched. Got plenty of freedom to bomb down the flanks and did so all night long.
Antonio Valencia - 8.5
Not many players could have come back from such a serious injury with as much ease as the Ecuadorean. The winger was outstanding yet again, muscling down the flank and setting up some great chances for his teammates.
Michael Carrick - 9
Had one his best nights out in a Manchester United shirt. Was allowed plenty of space by the cagey Schalke midfield and took full advantage; dictating play from deep within his own half with some creative pacing on both flanks.
Ryan Giggs - 8
It will be a month of Sunday before one sees the Welshman miss as many clear chances as he did on Tuesday. Nonetheless, the veteran midfielder was once again spot on with his passing and did give United the lead with a superbly timed run and cool finish.
Park Ji-Sung (off 73") - 6
Put in his usual perpetual-motion-machine shift in midfield, but his understanding with Rooney seemed to be off. Not as effective as he normally is in winning balls and launching counters.
Wayne Rooney (off 83") - 9.5
He was on song like a nightingale that is at the peak of its vocal powers. His passing and switching of play from one flank to the other seems to go up a notch with every game, and his goal was a prime example of the understanding he has come to share with Hernandez.
Javier Hernandez (off 73") - 6.5
How he did not score might well be the subject of a mystery novel soon. Granted Manuel Neuer was in blinding form, but we have come to expect lethal finishing from the Mexican. Did grab an assist with a gently rolled ball that sliced Schalke open.
