The history of the sword in the Korea begins with imports during Bronze Age in the mid 1st millennium BCE. Native production of Bronze and Iron swords appeared in the mid 1st millennium CE.[4] Korea eventually developed a unique sword industry and a native tradition of Korean swordsmanship (Geom-do or Kum-do "Way of the Sword"), which reached its peak during the Joseon Dynasty (15th to 19th centuries). This tradition was targeted for censure during the Japanese occupation of Korea (1910-1945), and many thousands of ancient swords were either stolen or destroyed.[5] After Imperial Japan was conquered by the United States, and Korea was liberated,[6] the sword culture began to recover.
