후보 1번> Australian. Since 2007, Stephanie Gilmore has been ranked No. 1 in the world by the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP). From August 2008 to December, she won the Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle, the Moviestar Classic Mancora Peru, the Roxy Pro Sunset and the Billabong Pro Maui competitions, cementing her No. 1 position in the final 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour Ratings with 7,188 points; the second-place finisher had 1,654 fewer points than Gilmore. In March 2009, she won the Roxy Pro Gold Coast competition. Gilmore came in second place at the Rip Curl Women’s Pro Bells Beach competition (April).

She won her second straight Snowboarder X crown at the Winter X Games 13 in January 2009 and is currently tied for most snowboarding gold medals by a female with five. Jacobellis won her 18th Snowboard World Cup at Quebec"s Stoneham Mountain Resort (February). Also in February, she won the women’s U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix at California’s Boreal Resort. At the World Cup in La Molina, Spain, she won her fifth World Cup of this season, despite trailing for most of the race (March).

후보 3번> Yu-Na Kim (Figure Skating) & #8211; Korean. Currently, Yu-Na Kim is the world’s No. 1 female figure skater. In October 2008, she won the Skate America competition with the second-place finisher behind by almost 21 points. Kim then went on to win the gold at the Cup of China (November). At the International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix of Figure Skating, she came in second, trailing the winner by 2.2 points (December). In February 2009, Kim won the Four Continents Figure Skating Championship; the second-place finisher trailed again by 21 points. She set two world records for highest scores in the short program and overall at the ISU World Figure Skating Championship (March). Kim is the first South Korean to win the World Figure Skating Championship.

후보 4번> Courtney Kupets (Gymnastics) & #8211; American. Courtney Kupets is the gymnastics all-time NCAA leader with nine individual championships, including three all-around titles. At the end of the 2009 season and her senior year, she had all-around figures of 39.9, 39.85 and 39.8, which rank second, fourth and sixth on the University of Georgia gymnastics all-time list. Kupets was then chosen as the American Athletic Association (AAI) National Senior Gymnast of the Year and the Southeastern Conference Gymnast of the Year. In April 2009, she led Georgia to its fifth straight NCAA championship as she scored 10s on vault and bars and 9.95s on beam and floor. Shortly after, Kupets was awarded her second Honda Sports Award for gymnastics (June). Also in June, she was awarded the Honda-Broderick Cup as the nation’s top collegiate female athlete.

At the 2008 Paralympic Games in September, Jessica Long won gold medals in the 100m butterfly, 100m freestyle, 200m individual medley and 400m freestyle, a silver medal in the 100m backstroke and a bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke. She also set a world and Paralympic record in the 100m freestyle, the 200m individual medley and the 400m freestyle. In March 2009, she received a Courage Award at the 16th Annual Courage Awards hosted by Tempe Sports Authority. Long then won a silver medal for the 100m backstroke at the Paralympic World Cup (May).

후보 6번> Lorena Ochoa (Golf) & #8211; Mexican. Since April 2007, Lorena Ochoa has been ranked No. 1 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings. In December 2008, she was the Rolex Player of the Year for the third straight year. By the end of 2008, Ochoa ranked No. 1 in rounds under par (61 of 83), rounds in the 60s (43 of 83), top-10 finishes (17 of 22), greens hit (876 of 1,224), scoring average (69.70), drive average (269.3) and Rolex points (314). Currently, she ranks No. 1 in rounds in the 60s (19 of 39), scoring average (69.77) and is No. 2 in career money with $13.9 million. In March and April 2009, Ochoa finished first in the Honda LPGA Thailand event and the Corona Championship, respectively. So far this season, she has had five top-10 finishes. Ochoa also won two 2009 ESPY awards, for Best International Female Athlete and Best Female Golfer.

She trails the leader by only 81 points, with a total of 266 points. She has five top-five finishes and eight top-10 finishes and has led 24 laps this season. Her current earnings total $788,305, the most among the three women in the IRL and third overall. In May 2009, Patrick finished third in the Indianapolis 500, the best-ever finish by a woman, after starting 10th.

In April 2009, she won the 200m race at the Sun Angel Classic. Stewart then won the 100m at a competition in Doha, Qatar and again at one in Kingston, Jamaica (May). In June, she placed second in the 100m at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore., and then won the 100m in Berlin, Germany. Stewart won the 100m at the Bislett Games in Oslo, Norway, and the 200m at Lausanne (July). She then went on to win the 100m again in Paris (July).

From November 2008 to January 2009, Lindsey Vonn won her first World Cup slalom in Levi, Finland and the super combined race (a downhill run and a slalom run) in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Austria. In February, she earned gold medals in both the downhill and the Super G at the Alpine World Championship, became the winningest female ski racer in American history after she won the Super G in Tarvisio, Italy, securing her 19th World Cup victory and she won the World Cup downhill title for the second straight season, becoming the second American to win the title back-to-back. In March, she was the first woman to win the overall World Cup for two straight seasons. At the end of the 2009 season, she was first in the Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS) Women’s Overall Standings with 1,788 points; 350 points ahead of second place, and had a U.S. record (male or female) nine World Cup wins in a single season. She is currently ranked No. 1 by the FIS in the Alpine World Cup.

She was also the top WTA Tour Prize Money leader with more than $3.8 million total (November). In January 2009, Williams won her 10th Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open after defeating Dinara Safina, currently ranked No. 1 in the WTA. She was also named the 2008 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Player of the Year (March). In July, Williams beat her sister Venus at the fourth all-Williams Wimbledon final, capturing her third Wimbledon title and her 11th Grand Slam Championship. She is currently ranked No. 2 by the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. Williams also won a 2009 ESPY award for Best Female Tennis Player.
