프랑스 작가 삐에르 로티 (Pierre Loti)는 1885년에 출판된 Japoneries d"automne라는 책에서 일본의 모든 것을 지독하게 혐오한다고 표현하고 있다. 그는 일본인은 말로 형언할 수 없게 지독하고 기분 나쁜 냄새의 저주 받은 추남, 추녀 황인종이라고 말하고 있다.
