防衛省・航空自衛隊は22日、F-35ステルス戦闘機について、10月にロッキード・マーチン社から1号機が引き渡されるとの見通しを明らかにした。引き渡し後はアメリカ合衆国アリゾナ州にあるルーク空軍基地でパイロットの実機操縦訓練が行われる。
F-35は、計42機の調達を計画しており、今年度予算で6機分が計上されている。今年度内にロッキード社から4機の引き渡しが予定されており、2017年から青森県にある三沢基地に実戦配備される。残り38機については、愛知県にある三菱重工業小牧南工場で国内生産されることになっており、既に製造が始まっている。
F-35について、航空自衛隊の杉山良行航空幕僚長は、「ステルス性で能力が向上する。防空戦闘における優位性が高まる」と強調した。
