Y.E. Yang"s countrymen rose at 4 a.m. Monday in South Korea to watch his final-round defeat of Tiger Woods in the PGA Championship. But the full impact of Yang becoming the first Asian-born golfer win one of the sport"s major championships might not be felt for a decade.

The golf industry has been looking for opportunities in Asia for several years. Just this year the R&A and Augusta National created the Asia Amateur tournament, to be played this fall in China. The winner gets a spot in The Masters. And the PGA Tour will stage a World Golf Championships event this fall in China, where there is tremendous room for growth.

Living in SoCal, many times in years past, I would go play at public courses when I had time (alot of times as a single) and 9 out of 10 times I would get paired with a Korean 3-some. These folks fly from Korea to SoCal for a week of nonstop golf because its cheaper to come here and play/stay than trying to get on in S. Korea!

I am confused. According to wikipedia, Tiger Woods is "one-quarter Chinese, one-quarter Thai, one-quarter African American, one-eighth Native American, and one-eighth Dutch." That makes him more Asian than anything. So why do the journalists (but not Tiger himself who calls himself "Cablinasian") consider him an African-American golfer and not an Asian golfer? Oh, maybe he should just be considered an American golfer.

Tiger is an excellent player and they only happen occasionally. What makes him tougher is his mindset that he will win. Most of the other players don"t don"t think they can win and so their minds will help them loose since they think that way to start. Until they really believe they have a chance to win like Yang did on Sunday, Tiger will continue to win like he is unbeatable. If you don"t think you can win, you won"t (Dr. Bob Rotella philosophy) and it is a true statement.
