.... 또한 일본은 폭력과 탐욕에 의하여 약취한 모든 다른 지역으로부터 축출될 것이다.
위 3대국은 조선 민중의 노예상태에 유의하여 적당한 시기에 조선이 자유롭게 되고 독립하게 될 것을 결의하였다....
.... Japan will be also be expelled from all her territories which she has taken by violence and greed.
The aforesaid three great powers, mindful of the enslavement of the people of Korea, and determined that in due course Korea shall become free and independent.
포츠담 선언 제 8항 (1945.7.26)
카이로선언의 모든 조항은 이행될 것이며, 일본국의 주권은 혼슈우, 홋카이도, 큐슈, 시코쿠와 우리들이 결정하는 작은 섬들에 국한될 것이다.
The terms of the Cairo Declaration shall be carried out and Japanese soveregnty shall be be limited to the islands of Honshu, hokkaido, Kyushu, shikoku, and such minor island as we determine.
일본항복문서 (1945.9.2) 중 일부
우리(일본)는 1945년 7월 26일 포츠담에서 미국, 중국, 영국의 정부 수뇌들에 의하여 발표되고, 그 후 소련에 의해 지지된 선언에 제시한 조항들을 수락한다. 우리는 이후 일본정부와 그 승계자가 포츠담선언의 규정을 성실히 수행할 것을 확약한다.
We(Japan), ... hereby accept the provisions set forth in the declaration issued by the heads of the Government of the United States, China, and the Great Bretain on 26, July, 1945 at Postdam, ....We hereby undertake for the Emperor, Japanese Government and their successors to carry out the provisions of the Postdam Declaration in good faith.
